1898-1922 Alfred Stedall, Alf Sadler junior
Freemason Lodge, with capacity for 41 boxes at the time, was built by Alfred Stedall in 1898 and leased to Alf Sadler junior in November 1898. Shortly afterwards Stedall also built Clarehaven Stables, adjacent to Carlburg. Alfred Sadler was the son of Alfred B Sadler, who trained at Primrose Cottage, Newmarket in the 1880s and 1890s. Alf junior became the first public trainer to occupy the splendid new establishment known as Freemason Lodge, on the left-hand side of the Bury Road, as you look towards the Limekilns, on Tuesday 6th December 1898. In the early days he specialised in handling 2-year-olds, but also had Stedall's older horses under his care. In 1900 the property was very nearly sold to Tod Sloan who had offered him £15,000 with the proviso that his chosen trainer, Leigh, was granted a licence to train. In August 1900 Lord Durham, speaking for the Jockey Club, had announced that horses had to be stabled in an establishment in which the licenced trainer had sole charge. The problem was that Mr F L Gardner's horses, managed by Sloan and trained by Leigh, were stabled in George Chaloner's yard. The plan was to purchase Freemason Lodge, transfer Gardner's horses to that yard and put Leigh in sole charge. Unfortunately, the Jockey Club refused Leigh's request for a licence.

NEWMARKET RACECOURSES
For over 4 centuries racing has been staged in Newmarket, but how have the racecourses evolved from an initial starting point at Fleam Dyke Pumping Station, some 8 miles from the town, with a winning post barely 200 metres from the town centre, into two world recognized, excellent racecourses and a universal acceptance that Newmarket is the Headquarters of racing?
To access an interactive racecourse map showing over 50 individually named racecourses CLICK HERE. The map will enable you to:-
1. Determine when extended races over 8 miles, 6 miles and 4 miles began to be replaced by the courses now visited by thousands annually;
2. Consider how the challenge of crossing the Devil's Dyke was overcome;
3. Contemplate why the town no longer has a steeplechase course despite having at least 5 courses during the past 2 centuries;
4. Examine the practicalities of having up to 48 starting posts and winning posts;
5. Appreciate that it was not financially viable to have an open racecourse spread widely across the heath, with a finishing post barely 200 metres from the town centre;
6. Research how and why the Cambridgeshire Handicap has been contested over 3 different courses.
NOTE: The map does not make mention of 2 particular courses:-
(i) Sefton Course (also known as the Cambridge Road Course)
Source: 1970 Raceform. Used from 1959 to 1975.
(ii) New Circular Course
The Circular Handicap was run on Friday 29th October 1875 on the New Circular Course of about two miles.
Source: London Standard (30th October 1875): ''the horses started near the Turn of the Lands, ran back way of the Cambridgeshire Course towards the Ditch, and afterwards proceeded down the side of the Tan Gallop, and turned into the Rowley Mile near the Bretby Stakes starting post, finishing at the stand at the end of the flat. Except in the hollow near the Cambridgeshire start the runners should have been visible all the way if the sky had been bright and clear''.
Another report hoped that the Circular Handicap would become a feature in future programmes, as it would be contested in front of the new grandstand which would be completed in about a year and would be able to accommodate thousands.
(I am grateful to Tim Cox for bringing attention to these 2 courses.)

In 1904 Mr Henry E Randall shared training duties with Alf Sadler, his son, also called H Randall, was married in July 1904 during his time at the stable. In the 1905 season the stable won just 18 races, with Sir Henry Randall owning 11 of those races and Alf Stedall owning 5 others. In July 1906 the Sporting Life listed all of the Newmarket Stables together with their respective trainers; Alf Sadler junior, known locally as Flash Alf because he always dressed so smartly, was listed at Freemason Lodge. The years 1906 to 1909 proved to be good years for Al Sadler, landing the 1906 July Handicap at Newmarket with Brother Bill, landing the 1907 Old Newton Cup (carried 6st 2lbs) and Ayrshire Handicaps with the Alf Stedall owned Wise Mason, and securing the 1909 Lincoln Handicap with Duke of Sparta (20/1). The War years were lean ones for Freemason Lodge, with Alf Stedall dying and many of the boxes in 1914 and 1915 remaining empty. However, in early January 1916 Lord Lonsdale transferred his string to Sadler on the retirement of previous trainer Joyner. Also, in January 1916 Alf Sadler became very busy when taking charge of the nearby Stanley House string during Honourable George Lambton's illness, in addition to his regular duties at Freemason Lodge. In October 1922 Cecil Boyd-Rochfort purchased Freemason Lodge from Al Sadler. In his final days at the training establishment, where he had been in charge for almost a quarter of a century, he sent out the dual 1922 Doncaster and Irish St Leger winner Royal Lancer, which caused a 33/1 surprise in the English version before being sent off the 4/6 favourite in the Irish version. Alf Sadler left for India, where he took a well-earned holiday, taking stable jockey Bobby Jones with him.

October 1922-1968 Captain Cecil Boyd-Rochfort
Cecil Boyd-Rochfort was born at Middleton Park, Meath on 16th April 1887 and was educated at Eton School. After leaving school he had a chance meeting with trainer Atty Persse at an Irish race meeting and was invited to become Persse's assistant at Grately Stable, Wiltshire. After 2 years he moved on to become Assistant to Captain Dewhurst at Bedford Lodge Stables in Newmarket. In 1912 he took on the post of Racing Manager to Sir Ernest Cassel, the Merchant Banker who donated a fortune to support the British Red Cross throughout the First World War, at his Moulton Paddocks Stud where Cylgad and Hapsburg were in training. Hapsburg subsequently finished second to Durbar II (SR 2030) in the Derby before winning the Eclipse Stakes. The outbreak of War interrupted Boyd-Rochfort's career, and he served as a Captain in the Scots Guards, winning the Croix de Guerre before being wounded at the Somme. He resumed his post with Sir Ernest after the War had ended, remaining with him until Sir Ernest died in 1921. The death of Sir Ernest prompted Boyd-Rochfort to branch out on his own, and he purchased Freemason Lodge from Alf Sadler in October 1922. He hit the ground running, for in the early Spring of 1923 Cecil entered Lady Nunburnholme's Plumb Square and Young Pole in minor £168 races at Pontefract. Maybe it was a sign of what was to come, for both of them were successful.

Within a year he had won the July Cup with Golden Corn, followed 3 years later with victory in the Stewards Cup with Perhaps So. Wins in the Cambridgeshire and the Yorkshire Cup followed, but it was not until 1933 that Brown Betty gave him his first Classic when she won the 1000 Guineas. He was crowned Champion Trainer on 5 occasions, in 1937, 1938, 1954, 1955 and 1958, and whilst at Freemason Lodge he sent out 13 English Classic winners, the best of which was Meld who won the 1955 Triple Crown, and the 1948 St Leger winner Black Tarquin. He was Royal trainer for King George VI, winning the 1946 1000 Guineas with the King's Hypericum. He then trained for HM Queen Elizabeth II, winning the 1958 2000 Guineas for Her Majesty with Pall Mall. He was ably supported by his assistant, Bruce Hobbs, the pair gaining a poignant victory for the Queen in 1954 when Aureole was victorious in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, while towards the end of his career he saddled the Queen's Canisbay to win the 1965 Eclipse Stakes. In 1964 he appointed his step-son, Henry Cecil, as his assistant at Freemason Lodge, the partnership remaining intact until Boyd-Rochfort retired at the end of the 1968 season, handing over the reins to Henry.

1969-1971 Henry Cecil
Henry Cecil trained at Freemason Lodge, taking over from his step-father, Cecil Boyd-Rochfort, at the start of the 1969 season, and remained there until Boyd-Rochfort sold Freemason Lodge. Henry notched few major victories during his time at Freemason Lodge, but did win the 1969 William Hill Futurity at Doncaster with Approval. Henry then moved to Chestnut Tree Stables, at that time known as Marriott, residing there until the end of the 1976 season, after which he moved to Warren Place. During his time at Chestnut Tree Stables he trained two 2000 Guineas winners, in 1975 Bolkonski (SR 2047) and in 1976 Wollow (SR 2000).

1972 Sir Michael Stoute
Michael Stoute, whose father was Chief of Police for Barbados, was born on the island on 22nd October 1945. After completing his schooling, he travelled to England to join Pat Rohan's stable as his assistant in 1964, remaining in post for the next 8 years.

In 1972 he took a licence to train in his own right, leasing Cadland House Stables for his string of 15 horses from Arthur Goodwill for the 1972 season before moving on to Beech Hurst Stables with 32 horses in 1973 and, from there, taking over at Freemason Lodge from Henry Cecil. Since his initial win with Sandal he has become firmly established, not only as one of the leading trainers of his day, but also has good claims to being one of the most successful trainers and highly regarded trainers in the history of the turf. He has been crowned Champion Trainer on 10 occasions, in 1981, 1986, 1989, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009, and has won no less than 15 English Classics. His first Classic victory was with Fair Salinia in the 1978 Epsom Oaks, but arguably his best, and certainly his most famous winner, was Shergar who won the 1981 Epsom Derby by 10 lengths in the hands of a very young Walter Swinburn. Although he is less famous for his exploits in National Hunt racing, he won the 1990 Champion Hurdle with Kribensis for owner Sheikh Mohammed. His horses have also graced the International stage, winning the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe with Workforce in 2010, the Japan Cup on 2 occasions, firstly with Singspiel in 1996, and again the next year with Pilsudski, and claiming 11 Irish Classic victories. He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1998, and not only continues to excel at Freemason Lodge, nut has also extended his operation to include Beech Hurst Stables.
